Umm.. I wore sz Small back then. If you chained enough for sz XL, then you crochet too tightly :)

At the first row after the fan u crochet single stitch into the chain with 4 chains. But at the 2nd row u crochet 2 chains then crochet single crochet into the chain of 4.
